There is no doubt that the 1990s proved to be a major inspiration for Spring 2013 fashion, so it should come as no surprise that the trend has filtered into beauty as well. 1990s beauty is all about a certain nonchalance, cool girl vibe. At Proenza Schouler, Kurt Cobain served as inspiration for the straight, stringy hair seen on the runway. Another 1990s rock star—Courtney Love—inspired the statement lips and grown out roots at Dries Van Noten. But when it comes to 1990s beauty, the key thing to focus on is skincare. Makeup artists relied on BB Creams, moisturizing treatments and weightless liquid makeup to create the seemingly bare and minimal makeup looks.
For the more adventurous, blue stood out as Spring 2013′s eye shadow shade of choice. At Mary Katrantzou, makeup artists blended red and blue pigments into a color that resembled a ballpoint pen. Statement lips were also out in full force, often involving multiple steps to achieve the brightest color. Some of the most popular shades included coral (Missoni), red (Prada, Rochas) and pink (Dries Van NotenOscar de la Renta).
In terms of hair, thin-stranded types should be happy to know that thin hairstyles are still going strong. At Céline, hair was kept super straight with a centre part. Other designers, such as Prabal Gurung, let a little wave creep in to an otherwise simple hairstyle. But don’t think that the thin hairstyles trend means a boring hair season. Braids, which have been going strong for some time now, continued their dominance with new styles inspired by different people and places from around the world. At Jason Wu, braids were twisted up into a loose updo. And hair accessories also made their return, such as the gorgeous crowns shown at Balenciaga.
